📣 Quotable

“It makes zero sense that federal law treats marijuana the same as heroin and LSD,” Rep. Greg Steube, a Florida Republican, said on X. “It is even more ridiculous that cocaine is technically classified as less restrictive than marijuana.”

Steube said he plans to reintroduce the Marijuana 1-to-3 Act which would move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III under the federal Controlled Substances Act. It’s a push for Congress to align with the Executive Branch on rescheduling.

Michigan cannabis market in trouble 🚫

Thirty-seven Michigan cannabis companies failed to renew their licenses, per reporting from Crain’s. Their reasons include high state and federal taxes, exorbitant licensing renewal fees (up to $24,000) and the plummeting price of cannabis in the state (among lowest per ounce in the nation). These companies include Pure Roots, Alvarez Cultivation, Consume Cannabis, and more.

Legal hemp in Texas is still not safe ⏳

Texas Democrats have not yet inadvertently saved hemp with their protest over redistricting. Gov. Greg Abbott said that he planned to call a second legislative special with the second agenda as the first one, after it expires on Friday. The special session started last month with regulating hemp among the four-dozen agenda items. Those efforts were derailed when Democrats walked out to prevent a quorum over plans to gerrymander the state in favor of Republicans.

Circuit Court remands case that could further complicate NY licensing 😣

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals said in an August 12 ruling, that prioritizing in-state locals in the December queue of dispensary applicants violates the US Constitution's Dormant Commerce Clause. Basically, the same folks from California who were able to sue and temporarily halt the first round of dispensary licenses a few years ago, may have now made it harder for the state to approve licenses for aspiring retailers that first applied for a license in December 2023.

Michigan recalls over 26,000 vape cartridges 🛢️

The state's Cannabis Regulatory Agencyannounced on Aug. 12 that Sky Cannabis had issued a voluntary recall on Motor City Cannacarts and RIPZ vape products due to the detected presence of medium-chain triglyceride oil. The oil is derived from coconut or palm oil and can be harmful if aerosolized and inhaled.
